There is an appeal to meat cooked right before your eyes, served with its flesh still sizzling from its encounter with a hot pan or fired up grill.
Apparently Nanbantei of Tokyo situated in Greenebelt 3 has been here all along (and now, with a new branch in Bonifacio High Street Central in Fort Bonifacio Global City, Taguig), serving yakitori open kitchen style the way it should be.
Nanbantei of Tokyo does serve a good array of Japanese cuisine, but its main thrust is serving some great Yakitori. So another “me-time” lunch break similar to that of Bistro Casanova was in store after sitting down in the counter facing the gas fired grill.

For the light eaters, Nanbantei of Tokyo has this special Yakitori Set (PHP 540.00) that has seven sticks of some of their favorite yakitori orders. And it comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup, and ice cream. From experience, though, this can be quite heavy as it is. Read on to find out why:
The waiter begins with a serving of some chopped carrots, cucumbers, and the local yam bean/Jicama (called singkamas by the locals). These seem to be good appetizers as it is, but there is this miso paste that they also give. It’s like a mix of delicate sour, salty, umami flavor that was just fantastic. You can even use this in the yakitori and it will give you great flavorful combinations also!
And then comes the Yakitori platter that you can see yourself being grilled and served. From left to right beginning from the top:

1. Chicken Gizzard – Not a fan of chicken innards, but this one at least tasted really clean and neutral
2. Chicken with onion leeks – Now we’re talking! Tender chicken pierced alongside onion leeks.
3. Asparagus – Not sure what is on top of the asparagus, but it tastes very much like steak grizzle. Quite addicting
4. Pork Sausages – Ground pork, turned into a sausage, sliced in wheels, grilled just right. ‘Nuff said.
5. Chicken balls – This one seems like a staple in Japanese Yakitori places.
6. Shiitake mushrooms – These tasted really fresh. Great watery crunch on them. Goes well with the miso paste
7. Beef strips – A bit tough but the amount of seasoning didn’t overpower the distinct flavor of beef.

Eating this with a bowl of rice was actually very filling. Then there’s also that miso soup and the scoop of ice cream. Seriously, it can be shared by two light eaters. And the freshness and delicate flavoring is a joy as it lets the characteristic of grilled food take over instead of compensating it with seasoning.
Nanbantei of Tokyo does some fresh Yakitori served in a classy yet almost izakaya-like placement. Down it with some great beer or a cool sake for your end-of-the-day working spirit renewal
