Carl and Chester Tan are not just cousins but something binds them both more than just their blood; both of them are coffee lovers. They decided to start Yellow Tree Café in Manila just this June of 2015. The Yellow Tree Café brand originally stands in Dagupan City where it has been successfully running for 4 years now.
Yellow Tree Café’s name is inspired by the color of “Yellow” which is typically associated with brightness, optimism, positivity, and warmth. Coupled with it is the word tree which is a symbolic thing for growth and one which bears fruit.
A small and cozy café, Yellow Tree Café can house around 20 to 25 people. If you’re looking for cafes that offer affordable coffee and a gracious ambiance, Yellow Tree Café is the perfect choice. The place is also perfect for intimate and warm conversations with a friend, a colleague, a family, a significant other and even a business partner; making the coffee experience more consoling.
Indeed, the place will make you feel warm despite the gloomy, rainy weather outside. The dark colored walls somehow complemented the warm bright yellow and green accents in the place. “We decided to use darker colors here since it’s the new trend.”
Chester worked as a barista for years in Singapore before he and Carl decided to put up Yellow Tree Cafe and its branch here in Manila. They both decided on having a coffee shop that serves both milk tea and coffee. “It was the peak of the milk tea industry. That’s why we wanted to serve both coffee and milk tea for our customers across all our branches.” Carl notes. And not only that, but Chester is also the brain of all the drinks’ formulas.
The cheerful and accommodating crew from Yellow Tree Café is trained by Chester himself. They were all very patient in taking all of our coffee orders and our drinks are always served with a cheerful smile!
Carl and Chester were generous to us by giving us the liberty to choose any drink from their wide selection of original formulated concoctions. And here’s what we had:
This classic Cappuccino with a single shot of espresso not only looks divine with its coffee rainbow effect, but this warm drink has the perfect milk foam consistency. At first sip, you can really taste the product of fresh espresso beans which complemented the light foam of the coffee.

One of the café’s cakes, the Mango Bravo is a fan favorite. It’s luscious foamy cake texture layered with cream and mangoes are delightful in every bite.
Mango Bravo Php 150 per slice
All of Yellow Tree’s cakes are not made straight from their café. They have a cake supplier which allows them to change flavors every now and then. This is to avoid monotony and provide variety to the café’s customers. Plus, it’s a great deal because all their cakes sell for only Php150 per slice!
My order was the Lychee Yakult Tea. I’ve been a fan of Yakult tea infusions because it’s different from the usual milktea selection so I decided to give this one a shot and I was not disappointed. Being both a Lychee and a Yakult fan separately, tasting them combined together is a splash in the mouth! Very refreshing, you’ll enjoy this sweet and semi-sour drink if you want to try something new!
Lychee Yakult Tea (Large Php75; Extra Large Php80)
For someone who isn’t a fan of sponge cakes, I really enjoyed their slice of Brazo de Mercedes. Only because its custard filling and the light flavor of meringue is not overwhelming in taste.
Brazo De Mercedez
The rich, moist chocolate cake is surprisingly not too sweet which is perfect for a hot cup of coffee. One of the café’s bestsellers, the Dark Chocolate Rock Salt Cream Cheese has a rich taste of high-quality Cacao Dark Chocolate which makes it more delicious with the hint of the Rock Salt Cream Cheese.

Another best seller is their Café Latte, an espresso based drink topped topped with foamy milk has all the right characteristics: perfect steamed milk and fresh espresso.
Café Latte (Small Php85; Regular Php100; Large Php110)
I’m not a fan of carrot cakes either but this one is also an exception. I appreciated its taste with its cream cheese frosting and hint of vanilla extract and cinnamon spice.
Carrot Cake 150 per slice
Yellow Tree Café also offers Gelato, an italian dessert staple. They have an exclusive partnership with Sheldon’s Gelato for this delicious offering. All of their Gelato ice cream are flavorful, creamy, and rich.
Gelato in flavors Pistachio, Vanilla, and Chocolate Php55 per cup
Gelato in flavors Strawberry and Sea Salt Caramel
Another best-seller is their Chocolate Chip Mocha Frappe. If you’re a chocolate lover, you will surely enjoy this rich tasting chocolate, coffee-based drink.
Chocolate Chip Mocha Frappe (Regular Php120; Large Php135)
If you want something stronger in taste, you must try the Mocha Espresso Frappe. Its taste can be likened to dark chocolate. A lovely, bittersweet drink!
