Special Beef empanada with Vigan longganisa, veggies and egg. The Super Special has an additional ground beef. Both deep fried to perfection and served with Vigan Vinegar!Personal Review
When in Vigan, one must walk the street of Calle Crisologo. One must ride a kalesa. And one must eat at Irene's Empanada! We decided not to have a heavy dinner and instead taste the different empanadas of Vigan. Our first stop, Irene's Empanada in Calle Crisologo. Hubby was looking for this place not realizing that the souvenir shop I was in is right beside Irene's sign
We went in and ordered. I got the Beef Special and Hubby ordered the Super Special since we was already so hungry. Instead of siting down, I watched the staff make empanada. Her movements were so fluid and perfect, it was like she had been doing it for years (probably did). I can't imagine how hard it must be to crack a whole egg on an empanada and manage to fold it in half without breaking or spilling the egg.
After several minutes of deep frying the empanada, it was served in a plate with a cup of vinegar. I didn't add the vinegar as I wanted to taste my emapanada au naturale
. It was nothing like the 'Vigan' emapanadas served in Manila. The crust was crispy, the egg was whole, the veggies fresh and the longganisa... truly Vigan! It was a great experience eating empanadas right in the city where it came from.
The prices of the empanadas were pretty cheap for something so authentic and delicious. I wanted to order another one but we were there to sample as many empanadas in Vigan as we possibly can.
At the end of the day, Irene's won in our empanada mission. Can't wait to try another one when we go back.Personal Rating
