Rice above the Rest
What makes a meal splendid is its simplicity.
Kanin Club in Ayala Triangle Makati makes dining experience seamless.
My girlfriend and I are two of the most adventurous food enthusiast there is – that’s the reason we discover Kanin Club.
Ambiance wise, it offers an ancestral house feel and look, complete with old, heavy wood door, tables and chairs, wooden floors, it even have a Capiz slide window. The feel and the mood is complimented with Filipino folk songs playing on the background - simple yet effective way to turn a place from just a room to a having a homey feel.
Now let’s go the main event – the food! On our first visit to the place, I was the one eager to get my hands (and taste buds) on everything on the menu. Good thing my girlfriend, asked the waiter what there best sellers were. That is where our adventure began!
We ordered Tinapa rice, Crispy Dinuguan, Crispy Liempo Strips (Bacon Thin) and Ensaladang Talong. We had Iced Tea for the drinks.
Tinapa rice is simply my greatest sin – it was so delicious that in a couple of spoonfuls it’s going to change your view on fried rice art itself. The combination of Jasmine fried rice, Tinapa flakes and itlog na maalat is simply heaven. It’s not greasy as expected of a fried rice but it is subtle and what’s weird is that it complements the dishes that we ordered.
Crispy Dinuguan is a masterpiece – the idea of crispy pork cubes and Dinuguan will pique your curiosity needle to the max. Taste wise, it tasted just the same to any Dinuguan in the market, what sets it apart is the notion that it is indeed “crispy”.
Next is the Ensaladang Talong – what I love Kanin Club’s Ensaladang Talong is that you can customize it. Like for example – personally I don’t prefer vinegar on my ensalada (well I know that it will beat the purpose of the dish) and I requested to have it on a separate dish and I request for an alamang as my own Ensaladang Talong condiment and I got it for FREE!!!
My girlfriend is a fan of anything that has to do with Liempo. So we tried, Crispy Liempo Strips (Bacon Thin) – it was incredible! And I mean it! The cut was perfectly thin that when it was served unbelievable it was not greasy, from the time that the dish landed on our table, until we finished our meal, down to the time that we requested all the left over food put in the goodie bag, (please include travel time going home) when we tried it for a bit of midnight snack munching – the Crispy Liempo still stand true to it’s name. IT WAS STILL CRISPY!!!
Now that I’ve described all the food that we’ve experienced, let’s talk about the budget. For all the dishes we had – I could say that we roughly shelled out 900.00 Php more or less.
If you’re going to ask me, with several factors to consider: Ambiance, good food, good service, wonderful dining experience. PRICELESS.
Dining experience all in all was 4/5. I didn’t give it a perfect score because I always go for improvement and more room to grow as an establishment. Kanin Club as it is right now is at par with the best authentic Filipino restaurants there is. Don’t miss it.
