a night at Barbara's

Soft breezy winds, overcast skies, flutter of a fan, and the swish of the saya as it passes by tells me that I have traveled back in time. Flickering candles, intricate needlework, and framed mirrors and photos tell stories of people who lived in the past. The walls whisper their stories, the food tells of their legacy.

I am at Barbara's ... it is circa 2012 but I feel like I've been transported back to circa 1898.

Barbara's is one of Intramuros well kept secret. In fact, it was only through word of mouth that I heard of this place. It was a very soft whisper. If you ask people about it, they would tell you its a wedding reception place but no one would think to dine here on their own, with a family, or on a date.

It's time to change that. Barbara's is actually a family owned restaurant that aims to allow people to attend a salo salo straight out of Noli Me Tangere while showcasing cultural dances that promises to elicit a gasp and thunderous applause. The cultural show is such a crowd pleaser that you'd have to have extremely poor taste or lacking the cultural bone in your body to not appreciate it.

The cultural show was the main highlight of the entire dinner but lets not forget the food. Some of the viands that stood out for me were the following:

These are the food that I would eat again and again at Barbara's. It was delicious and not overpowering. The chicken was soft and chewy, the lumpia was bursting with flavors, and the desserts were to die for. While the show was a feast for the eyes, the food was a feast for the palette.

And the thing that I love most about the place was that it was a picture waiting to tell a thousand stories. So, come visit me.

Dinner with a Dance Show
Just OK 2012-01-27
Barbara’s Resturant offers Filipino dishes and desserts such as gulaman, turon, canonigo, cassava cake, sago gulaman with cream etc. The featured dishes when we were there were kalabasa soup, cream dory fish fillet, beef, chicken, pasta, fried lumpia and vegetable salad. I was not able to take photos of their food for the day as we were seated far from where the buffet table was set up.

Eating at Barbara’s Restaurant is a different kind of experience. They showcase traditional folk dances complete with colourful and beautiful costumes. Since they have shows almost everyday (really don’t know if there are on weekends), the dancers have mastered their craft and are really excellent in their terpsichorean skills.

They are composed of men and women in their 20’s and early 30’s. They are so energetic and have nice facial expressions when they perform on stage. The show takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour. The centerstage is big enough to accommodate around 10 dancers and is equipped with spotlights to give perfect lighting while the dining area is dimly-lit. It is actually dinner by candlelight while the cultural dance is going on.

Some of the folk dances they presented are Tinikling, Pandanggo sa Ilaw, Carinosa, Maglalatik among others.

This kind of dining experience, which are attraction to tourists, is also ideal for families especially those with kids so that they may be exposed to our cultural dances and that they may realize how beautiful our cultural legacy is. If this show has a lunch schedule, this is an ideal fieldtrip activity for students from Grade 4 to College level.

Live Show at Barbara's
Just OK 2012-01-26
We wanted something different for dinner so we tried the dinner buffet at Barbara’s Restaurant which included a cultural show. We heard that buffet was frequented by balikbayans and foreigners and it was good to see families including small children at the restaurant. As this was inside Intramuros, Barbara’s interior and exterior was old Manila through and through. The interior was all wood from ceiling to flooring; quite impressive.

The buffet was all Filipino comfort foods with choice of pancit sotanghon, laing, chicken barbecue, pork afritada among others. The dishes were nothing special but the desserts like the cassava cake, maja blanca and kutsinta all served as bite sized squares were all good. They also served fruits such as papayas and pineapple.

But the ‘main event’ at Barbara’s was not served at the buffet table but at centre stage, right in the middle of the dining area. The cultural show was quite entertaining as I know, Metro Manila folks like us do not get to see live, traditional folk dance that often; it was very visually filling.

The show also features an audience participation portion that was gamely joined by a group of Japanese tourists. Glad there is a restaurant in Metro Manila that regularly features this kind of entertainment. Bravo!

Intramuros has a nostalgic feel into it which I really love. It's so nice to take photos around the area. It makes for a very good fashion spread backdrop, no wonder why fashion magazines take their fashion crew here to shoot every now and then. I've seen spreads from magazines that were taken in Intramuros and the result is breathtaking, to say the least.

Well, that's one thing to love about the place. The other one is the nice restaurants in the area. Barbara's is suggested by a friend. I was told that they serve really really good pasta here and you must try their cheesecakes, you should not leave the place without trying their cheesecakes.

So I heed the advice and went there to have pasta and blueberry cheesecake. True enough, their pasta is really good. I can't decide if I have to go for another plate or stay true to my diet and stick to one plate only. Their cheesecake is to-die-for! It's creamy and very rich. I love to take it home and have my mom and sis try it too.
